It was incorporated in 1777, and sturdy Scotch-Irish settlers established a Presbyterian church here in 1788. Antrim, unlike many towns of its size, attracts a number of shoppers and diners from nearby towns. Its main street is lined with stately Victorian residences. Gregg Lake and Franklin Pierce Lake are popular for fishing, boating and swimming. The Monadnock region of south western New Hampshire is best known for Mount Monadnock, the most climbed mountain in the United States, which has over 40 miles of trails. Also known as "Currier & Ives Country" - this area is also widely recognized for it's preservation of history. Many churches, inns, and colonial houses are well taken care of and still in use after almost two-hundred years. When visiting the Monadnock area, be sure to stop by the town of Greenfield, which is home to one of the oldest meetinghouses that are still in use. The Ashuelot covered bridge in Swanzey, is one of New Hampshire's most elaborate covered bridges. |
