Telephone: 212-345-7552 (USA) Activities/Attractions: With its long, sandy beaches, rugged mountain peaks and medieval hilltop villages, the Languedoc-Roussillon boasts one of France's most diverse landscapes. Officially the sunniest region in the country, it is also France's wine growing capital and the largest wine-growing area in the world. Bordered by the Spanish Pyrénées, the lavender fields of Provence and the rocky Massif Central to the north, the area is noted for its relaxed pace of life and is a popular hideaway for those seeking peace and tranquillity. Miles of fine sandy beaches, a hinterland rising up the foothills of the Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Languedoc-Roussillon is a land full of character, stretched out under almost permanent sunshine.
Every Saturday there is a large fresh market that sells everything from pottery to the famous Provence linens to fresh poultry, meats, fish and produce. The market is held in and around the beautiful Place aux Herbes (town square). A smaller local market is held on Wednesday, as well. You can spend an afternoon strolling around the town admiring the splendid architecture. There are excellent restaurants to eat in, quaint cafes where you can sit, relax and enjoy a cup of coffee and charming shops to explore. There is also a cinema for those who might want to see a film after dinner. For those who love pottery and for those who just love enchanting villages head north of Uzes about 2 miles and you will come to St-Quentin-la-Poterie, world famous for pottery.
