Activities/Attractions: Also known as Casa or Dar el Baida, Casablanca is essentially the capital of Morocco. Any European citizen or traveler will feel immediately at home here and will have an almost instinctive understanding of the life here. This North African metropolis, largest city and industrial heart of Morocco, has direct access to the Atlantic Ocean through one of the world's largest artificial ports. France occupied Morocco for the first half of the 1900s, leaving a legacy of language and architecture after its 1956 withdrawal. Revived by industrial growth and tourism, the city shows a thoroughly modern face.

The old city is more reminiscent of the Casablanca of Bergman and Bogart; a much smaller area with older houses and a good market. Certain landmarks are particularly beautiful, such as the Hassan II Mosque, which is well worth a visit. Casablanca attractions include:

Rummage for leather goods, silver jewellery, copper, brassware and rugs in Casablanca's old and new Medinas. If your bargaining is not up to scratch try Exposition Nationale d'Artisanat where prices are fixed. Place des Nations Unies is the main shopping area while French brand names are getting a foothold on Boulevard d'Anfa in the western suburb of Anfa, where the city's smart set live.

Take a bracing swim in the Atlantic or hang with the cool set around the swimming pools of the various beach clubs that line the coast at Ain Diab. Stroll the tree-lined walkways of the Parc de la Ligue Arabe that lead to its formal flower beds. Alternatively, negotiate the flowers and trees of the Anfa Royal Golf Course, only nine holes but nonetheless a challenge.
