Nearby Attractions: While there are activities and events scheduled on the island throughout the year, you can choose to go days at a stretch without an appointment to keep. In fact, unless you have a tee time or are particularly keen to catch the fishing at low tide, time is rarely of the essence on Bald head Island.

You may start your day with a bike ride, for example, and stop to visit the grand lady of the forest, an ancient live oak tree, along the way. Notice the narrow path that leads deeper into the forest and you're off on a hike that looks and feels more like a setting from North Carolina's spectacular mountain country.

After a picnic under the canopy of oaks, dogwoods and palms, you might trade your bike for inline skates and circle the island's wynds and ways. As you glide past the ocean, you may catch a glimpse of a majestic sailing ship, shuck your skates for bare feet and venture out onto the sand for a closer look.

Inspired by your mind's eye images of the ship's exotic port of call, you may decide to create a stately sandcastle, appropriately adorned with lovely shells you collect as you venture out to the very edge of the continent-Cape Fear Point. Wading into a tidal pool created by the shifting sands of this incredible geographical phenomenon, you'll reflect on the day's adventures as warmly as the water reflects the golden light of late afternoon.

General Information: Each of the six different living environments or vacation rentals on Bald Head Island in North Carolina has its own unique charms.

Homes and homesites are available on the ocean, on the dune ridge, along the marsh and creek, in the forest, along the golf course or in the harbour.

Set among or bordering these magnificent natural expanses, most island homes feature a traditional coastal architectural style with distinctive details like wide porches, long roof overhangs and cedar siding, along with central courtyards, trellises, picket fences and connecting walkways.

• Homes: 1-5 bedrooms, oceanfront first or second row, ocean view, marsh/creek, golf course view or maritime forest.
  
• Villas: 2 bedrooms with a loft, beside golf course.
  
• Cottages: single units but in a community with other look-a-likes! Ibis Roost, Sabal Palm and Surfman's Walk.
